Toothpaste: What’s in Your Tube?

Posted .

Brushing your teeth is a major component of good dental health. In order to do that well, you will need a good toothpaste. There are plenty of brands and types available on the market, but they all have the same basic ingredients.

For example, all kinds of toothpaste contain a detergent. When your toothpaste foams as you brush and spreads around your mouth, that is the detergent at work. Unless you are using a toothpaste designed for dentures, it will have abrasives in it, which help to remove the plaque and some stains from your teeth. You are able to squeeze the toothpaste out of the tube due to humectants, which helps keep the toothpaste moist and pliable. But the thickening agents are what keeps it from dripping off of your toothbrush. Finally, that fresh minty taste you enjoy is from the flavoring.

You should talk to your dentist about which toothpaste is the best for you since some are formulated for specific things. While most toothpaste contains fluoride to fight tooth decay, some contain ingredients that will combat gum disease, while others may help in desensitizing your teeth. Others may help to strengthen your enamel or remineralize your teeth, while some are created to whiten teeth.  There are also toothpastes that have flavors such as bubblegum and strawberry, which can help kids get excited about brushing.

If you would like to find out which kind of toothpaste is best for you, our dentist, Dr. Anthony Shaia at Shaia Dental Care will be happy to help. If you live in the city, state, area, you can make an appointment by calling 440-884-9898.
