Care and Cleaning of your Dental Implants

Posted .

Dental implant technology has greatly advanced over the course of the last 20 years. Now dental implants can be used to replace a tooth, anchor a bridge or even provide anchor points to a secure a set of dentures. Your implants represent a serious investment in restoring the full function to your mouth. With thoughtful care and cleaning, they can last for many years to come.

While it is true that the titanium abutment and the materials of your crown or bridge are made from materials that are immune to tooth decay; they will none-the-less require care and cleaning.

Plaque from food particles and residual sugar in the mouth can build up on your implant. In time this can harden into tartar. Tartar at the gum line is one of the main causes of gum disease. Left unchecked gum disease can cause the gums to recede from the crown exposing the base of the titanium abutment. Bacteria can then attack the bones anchoring the abutment or the cementing anchoring the abutment to the crown.

Brushing and flossing twice per day will help remove much of the food particles and plaque before they can harden. Rinsing your mouth with antiseptic mouthwash will also help kill bacteria and wash away any residual food particles. Even with a good oral hygiene routine, it’s not uncommon for a little tartar to build up in your mouth.

Tartar build up can only effectively be removed by the professional techniques and equipment your dentist uses at your regular checkup.
